Most travellers to Tanzania will need a visa, which can be easily obtained either online or upon arrival at major entry points like Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar airports.   • Green Season (November – March): Known for the “short rains,” this period is lush, with fewer tourists. January and February are great for witnessing the calving season in the Serengeti, where many animals give birth, attracting predators and providing excellent wildlife viewing.
  • Long Rains (March – May): While rain may limit accessibility in some areas, this season offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower accommodation rates.

Packing Tips

What you pack for Tanzania will depend on the activities you’re planning, but here are some essentials to ensure you’re prepared for any adventure:

  • Safari Essentials: Bring neutral-coloured, lightweight clothing to blend with the environment. Long sleeves and pants are recommended to protect against sun and insects.
  • Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Gear: Pack layers for varying temperatures, especially a warm jacket, thermal clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and a quality daypack.
  • Beachwear for Zanzibar: Lightweight clothing, swimwear, and a cover-up for visiting local villages where modesty is appreciated.

  • Insect Repellent: Effective repellent to guard against mosquitoes and other insects.
  • Sunscreen and Sunglasses: The sun can be intense, so pack a high SPF sunscreen and sunglasses with UV protection.
  • Travel First Aid Kit: Include essentials like antiseptic wipes, bandages, any personal medications, and anti-diarrheal tablets.
  • Power Adapter: Tanzania uses Type D and G sockets (230V). A universal adapter is ideal.

  • Cash and Payments: Bring some cash (USD is widely accepted) as ATMs may not be readily available outside major towns. Credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants, but cash is often needed in rural areas.
  • Local Customs: Tanzanians are friendly and polite; a few words of Swahili (like “Asante” for “Thank you”) go a long way. Dress modestly when outside beach and resort areas, especially in Zanzibar.
