Materuni Waterfall is the highest and most impressive waterfall at the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, located at latitude -3.25025° (3° 15′ 1″ S) and longitude 37.40007° (37° 24′ 0″ E).
Upon arrival, you will complete the necessary formalities before embarking on a scenic 40-minute hike down to the village and waterfall. The trail takes you through rolling hills and valleys covered in lush tropical rainforests, and coffee, banana, and avocado farms, locally known as shambas. Your guide will provide insights into the flora, fauna, and local farming practices.
Once you reach the waterfall, you can take in its breathtaking beauty and enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool, clear waters, so don’t forget to bring your swimming gear.
After the waterfall visit, you’ll experience an authentic coffee tour, where you will learn about the entire coffee production process from cultivation and harvesting to roasting and brewing done the traditional Chagga way. You’ll even get to roast and prepare your cup of freshly brewed coffee.
To complete your experience, you’ll enjoy a delicious traditional meal featuring a variety of local dishes and fresh seasonal fruits. This will give you a true taste of the region’s culture before departing the village.
On a clear day, you’ll also be rewarded with stunning views of Kibo Peak and Moshi town during the hike. Please note that the trek to the waterfall can be physically demanding, so sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended.
